Quikrete Kitchen Remodeling: The Pasadena Owner’s Guide

If you’re planning a kitchen remodel in Pasadena that involves Quikrete products, the typical installed project range is $14,000 – $45,000 depending on scope, materials, and the condition of your subfloor and framing. Most Quikrete-related kitchen work we handle falls into two buckets: floor leveling and underlayment before tile, or concrete countertop and backsplash work where Quikrete mixes are spec’d. Homeowners usually call us when an existing Quikrete base has cracked, settled, or separated from the surrounding floor, leaving tile lippage, hollow-sounding spots, or visible cracks telegraphing through the finished surface.

We’re Sawyer Remodel Pasadena. We install and correct Quikrete-based systems in kitchens throughout Pasadena every month. And we’re an independent contractor, not affiliated with Quikrete. If the product failed or the original install was done wrong, we can tell you exactly why and what it’ll take to make it right.

Which Quikrete Models This Applies To

Quikrete makes dozens of concrete and mortar products, but in a kitchen the relevant ones are specific. In Pasadena kitchens we work with three lines more than any others: Quikrete Self-Leveling Floor Resurfacer, Quikrete Sand/Topping Mix, and Quikrete Countertop Mix. Each has a different failure pattern and a different fix.

The compatibility gotcha most homeowners miss: Quikrete Self-Leveling Floor Resurfacer is designed for pours between 1/8″ and 1″ thick, and it bonds poorly to old cutback adhesive or sealed concrete. In Pasadena homes from the 1930s through the 1960s, we regularly find original slab floors with wax-based sealers under the old vinyl, and nobody stripped them before pouring. That’s why the new floor cracks within a year. If you’re matching a repair to an existing pour, we check the substrate first, not the bag label.

OEM vs. aftermarket isn’t really the right frame for Quikrete. It’s about matching the mix to the job. A Sand/Topping Mix used as a floor underlayment will crumble because it wasn’t designed for thin bonded applications. The right product matters more than the brand name. We stock the common Quikrete lines on our trucks, and we spec alternatives from CTS and Ardex when the substrate demands it.

Signs Your Quikrete Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Tile cracks running in a straight line across the floor. This usually means the Quikrete underlayment cracked beneath the tile and the tile cracked with it. The fix is removing the affected section, repairing the base, and reinstalling. Patching tile alone won’t hold.
  • Hollow or drummy sound when you tap the floor. The bond between the Quikrete layer and the slab below has separated. In Pasadena’s warm-dry climate, this often happens when the original install was done over a dusty or unprepared surface.
  • Countertop edges chipping or spalling along the front lip. Quikrete Countertop Mix is solid, but if the forms weren’t vibrated or the mix was too dry, the edges go brittle. You’ll see small flakes breaking off near the sink or dishwasher.
  • Grout cracking repeatedly in the same joints. Movement below the tile, usually a failed leveler or flexing subfloor, pushes stress through the grout lines. Re-grouting fixes appearance for a few months, then it comes back.
  • Self-leveler lifting at door thresholds or cabinet kickplates. The pour was trapped against a fixed edge without an expansion gap. It expands with heat, compresses against the cabinet, and pops loose. We see this constantly in Pasadena kitchens with cabinet runs over 10 feet.

Luca Romano grew up in East Los Angeles and has seen every variant of these failures. The work tells you everything. You just have to know how to listen to it. A cracked underlayment sounds different from a cracked tile when you tap it. That distinction changes the whole repair plan.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

An open kitchen and dining area after a remodel

Here’s what kitchen work involving Quikrete products has cost our Pasadena clients, based on recent projects:

  • Full kitchen remodel with Quikrete floor prep, new cabinets, counters, and tile: $14,000 – $45,000
  • Small / galley kitchen remodel: $9,000 – $20,000
  • Countertop replacement including Quikrete base repair: $2,000 – $6,500
  • Backsplash install with surface prep: $800 – $2,500
  • Island addition with leveling and underlayment: $3,000 – $10,000
  • Cabinet installation only: $4,000 – $13,000

The spread comes down to three things: how much of the failed Quikrete layer has to come out, what’s underneath it, and the finish materials you pick. Cambria and Silestone counters sit on top of whatever base they’re set on, and a bad base ruins a good top. That’s why we pull samples and check the substrate before we quote, not after.

Every Sawyer Remodel Pasadena project includes a written price before work starts, the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and if a repair fails within the warranty period, we come back free. The number on your invoice is the number you approved. No change orders because we discovered what we should have caught in the estimate.

DIY or Call Us?

Mixing and pouring Quikrete is doable for a confident DIYer on a small countertop planter or a non-structural patch. But a failed kitchen floor underlayment is not a weekend job. Removing the old layer without damaging surrounding tile, framing, and cabinet bases takes specialty tools and a good eye for depth. If you hit a plumbing line or a post-tension cable in a Pasadena slab, you’ve turned a $1,500 floor repair into a $5,000 problem.

What you can safely check: read the date codes on any leftover Quikrete bags, measure the crack widths and note whether they’re growing month to month, and take photos with a tape measure for scale. That gives us a head start. Then call (626) 657-5396 and we’ll send Luca or a senior tech to assess it in person.
