IKO Driveway & Pavers: The Pasadena Owner’s Guide
We install and service IKO-compatible paver driveway systems throughout Pasadena, and a full replacement typically runs $7,000 to $18,000 installed, depending on square footage, the existing base, and access. Most homeowners discover they need this page when a few pavers start sinking, the sand between joints washes out after winter rain, or a tree root pushes a section up like a bad skin graft. We stock IKO cambridge-series replacement pavers and the matching edge restraints on our trucks, so in most cases we can bring your driveway back to flat in a single day.
Here’s the thing about IKO pavers in Southern California that most guides skip: the pavers themselves rarely fail. The system underneath them does. And when the base fails, the pavers just sit there and tell you about it. The work tells you everything. You just have to know how to listen to it.
Which IKO Models This Applies To

IKO’s paver line splits into two families that show up constantly in Pasadena driveways: the IKO Cambridge series (interlocking concrete pavers in 3-piece modular sizes, typically 6cm thick for driveways) and the IKO Aristocrat series (larger-format pavers, often 8cm thick, for heavier vehicle loads). If your home is under twenty years old and the driveway looks like a brick-pattern concrete paver, there’s a strong chance it’s Cambridge. Older installs, especially on wider lots in the San Rafael Hills or Linda Vista, tend to be Aristocrat or a mix-and-match job somebody did without checking series compatibility.
The gotcha that bites people: Cambridge and Aristocrat pavers are not interchangeable. They have different joint widths, different chamfer profiles, and slightly different heights. If you patch a Cambridge driveway with Aristocrat pavers, you get a visible lip and a joint pattern that looks like a typo. Take a photo of the paver face and measure the thickness with a tape before you order anything. Our crews confirm the series on-site before we quote, because we’ve seen too many homeowners buy the wrong pallet online.
On OEM versus aftermarket: IKO discontinued some color blends that were popular in early-2000s Pasadena builds. If your color is no longer manufactured, a quality concrete aftermarket paver from a local supplier like Thompson Building Materials or Orco will match within a shade or two, but we always show you a sample laid against your existing pavers before we commit. For anything structural (edge restraints, base, joint sand), we stay strict on spec: polymeric sand rated for vehicle traffic, 6 inches of compacted class II base minimum. That’s the part that actually holds the driveway up.
Sawyer Remodel Pasadena is an independent remodeling and hardscape contractor. We’re not affiliated with IKO, and we don’t pretend to be. We just know their paver systems well enough to tell you the truth about what’s failing.

Signs Your IKO Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Sinking or depressions in the wheel tracks. This is almost always base failure, not paver failure. Pasadena’s clay-heavy soil expands and contracts with moisture, and if the original base was compacted in less than 6-inch lifts, it settles over time. You’ll see two parallel low spots where the car sits every night.
- Sand washing out of the joints after rain. Regular joint sand disappears over time, but if you see it running down the curb after every storm, the edge restraint has failed or the slope is off. Left unfixed, pavers start shifting and chipping at the edges.
- Pavers rocking or tilting underfoot. A paver that moves when you step on it means the base directly under that spot has eroded, usually from water pooling. If it’s near a downspout, the cheapest fix is redirecting water, not repaving.
- Weeds or moss growing through the joints. This tells you the joint sand has been gone long enough for soil to take its place. Weeds in the joints aren’t just ugly; their roots hold moisture against the paver edges, which accelerates freeze-thaw spalling even in mild Pasadena winters.
- Cracked or chipped pavers near the street apron. The apron takes the most abuse: cars turning, trash bins, occasional delivery trucks. If several pavers in a row are cracked, the base at the transition from street to driveway has likely dropped, concentrating load on a single row.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Pasadena, a full IKO paver driveway replacement runs $7,000 to $18,000 installed. That breaks down roughly as $8 to $14 per square foot for a complete teardown, base rebuild, paver install, and polymeric sand, with the range driven mostly by driveway size, existing base condition, and access constraints. A standard two-car Pasadena driveway of about 600 square feet lands around $9,000 to $11,000 in most cases. Partial repairs (a 100-square-foot patch or resetting a sunken section) run proportionally less and are usually finished same day.
Everything we quote is a written line-item price before we touch your driveway: demolition and haul-off, base material, edge restraints, pavers, joint sand, compaction, and cleanup. The number you approve is the number you pay. Period. And the work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if a section settles or the sand fails within a year, we come back and make it right, in writing, no argument. We also pull any Pasadena permits required for driveway work over 500 square feet and pass inspections before we call it done.

You can absolutely check a few things yourself before you spend a dime. Walk the driveway after rain and mark every paver that rocks with a piece of chalk. Check whether downspouts are dumping water onto a low spot. Snap photos of the pattern and measure paver thickness. That’s useful intelligence you can hand us on the phone.
What we don’t recommend: pulling up sunken pavers and hand-tamping new base with a rental plate compactor, especially if you’ve never built an interlocking system before. The failure most DIY repairs share is thinking the base is “good enough” and skipping proper compaction in lifts. Six months later the patch is sinking again, and now you have fresh pavers next to old ones and a line that looks like a scar. If the area is larger than about 50 square feet or involves the street apron, call a pro. We’re at (626) 657-5396, and the estimate is free.
FAQs

Twenty-five years or more for the pavers themselves, assuming the base was installed correctly and the joints stay filled. In Pasadena’s climate, without freeze-thaw extremes, the pavers hold up well. What shortens the system’s life is base settlement and water intrusion, not the concrete. Call (626) 657-5396 if your driveway is older than 15 years and showing low spots; we’ll tell you if you need a repair or a full reset.
In most cases, yes. If the base under one section is solid and only the surface pavers are damaged, we can patch in matching pavers and re-sand the joints in a day. If the base has failed or the original paver color is no longer made, a partial repair may look worse than a full replacement. We’ll show you both options with pricing before you decide. Estimates are free at (626) 657-5396.
Two to four days for a standard two-car driveway in Pasadena, depending on access and whether we’re pulling a permit. Day one is demolition and base prep, day two is paver installation and compaction, then joint sand and final inspection. We give you a written schedule and photo updates through The Relay Standard so you know exactly when we’re on-site.
We keep IKO Cambridge-series pavers and matching edge restraints on our trucks for common repairs across Pasadena, and we source Aristocrat pavers locally with same-week turnaround. You don’t need to order anything. Call (626) 657-5396 with a photo of your driveway and we’ll identify the series before the first visit.
