Abodu Driveway & Pavers: The Pasadena Owner’s Guide
We install and repair Abodu-compatible driveway paving and paver systems across Pasadena, with most replacements running $7,000 – $18,000 for a full paver driveway and $4,500 – $12,000 for concrete. If you’ve got a cracked paver, a sunken section, or a driveway that’s started shifting after rain, we can usually diagnose it same day and get the repair scheduled that week. What we don’t do is sell you a whole new driveway when three pavers and a re-compacted base would fix the problem.
One thing to know up front: Sawyer Remodel Pasadena is an independent contractor. We’re not affiliated with the Abodu company itself, but we work on Abodu properties regularly and know how their driveway specs interact with Pasadena’s soil, drainage, and sun exposure. That matters more than you’d think.
Which Abodu Models This Applies To

Abodu’s accessory dwelling units ship with a few standard exterior finishes, and the driveway treatment is usually gravel, poured concrete, or interlocking concrete pavers depending on the site and the permit package the original owner selected. The unit model itself (Abodu Studio 500, Studio One 750, or Two Bedroom 1000) doesn’t change the paver system much, but what does change is how the base was prepped, how drainage was handled around the unit, and whether the original contractor cut corners on compaction.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people don’t catch until the third or fourth year: Abodu driveways in Pasadena are frequently built over expansive clay soil. The pavers themselves are typically a standard 60mm or 80mm interlocking concrete paver, which is plenty strong. But if the base rock under them was installed at less than 4 inches of compacted Class II base, or if the original install didn’t account for Pasadena’s winter rain saturation, you’ll see pavers start to sink or separate, especially near the curb cut and along the edge closest to the unit. That’s not a paver failure. It’s a base failure, and replacing pavers on top of bad base just means you’ll replace them again in two years. We always check the base first.
OEM versus aftermarket for pavers isn’t really a thing the way it is for appliances. Pavers are pavers. What matters is matching the size, thickness, and color lot of what’s already down so the repair doesn’t look like a patch. Belgard, Calstone, and Basalite all make pavers we can match to an existing Abodu driveway, and we keep common 60mm Holland and tumbled paver styles on the truck for service calls.

Signs Your Abodu Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Pavers rocking underfoot at the edges. This usually means edge restraint failed or was never installed. Once the outside row of pavers starts migrating, the whole field loses tension and begins to spread. Caught early, it’s a $300 – $600 fix. Caught late, you’re rebuilding half the driveway.
- A low spot that puddles after rain. Pasadena gets enough winter rain that a low spot isn’t cosmetic. It means the base settled unevenly underneath, and every puddle is working water down into the subgrade, making the problem worse each season.
- Cracks running in a straight line through concrete pavers or a poured slab. Straight line cracks near the edges of the foundation or along where the driveway meets the Abodu unit usually point to a specific stress point or inadequate control joints, not random wear.
- Sand or fine material washing out between pavers. Polymeric sand should lock the joints. If you’re seeing sand on the driveway surface after rain or seeing gaps growing between stones, the joint material has failed and the pavers are rubbing against each other.
- The driveway slopes toward the unit. This is the one we flag hardest because it’s a structural and drainage concern: if your driveway was never graded properly, water’s running toward the foundation of the ADU, not away from it. That can mean re-grading and sometimes drains, not just new pavers.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what a Pasadena Abodu driveway job runs, based on what we see in the field:
- Paver driveway (full install): $7,000 – $18,000
- Concrete driveway (full pour): $4,500 – $12,000
- Asphalt driveway: $3,500 – $9,000
- Partial paver repair or section re-leveling: $800 – $4,000 depending on square footage and base condition
The spread comes down to square footage, how much base rework is needed, access for equipment (some Pasadena lots are tight), and whether your existing driveway has drainage that needs correcting. Every quote from us is a written, line-item number before any work starts, and the invoice won’t change at the door. The 365-Day Done Right Promise applies: if something we installed fails within a year because of our work, we come back and make it right. No argument, no invoice.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely inspect your own driveway: look for the symptoms above, note where water pools after a storm, and check whether any pavers rock. You can also pull a single loose paver, look at the base underneath, and see if you’re seeing compacted gravel or loose dirt. That tells you a lot. What you shouldn’t do is start pulling up large sections, trying to re-grade, or messing with drainage. Once you expose the base, you’ve got a race against the next rain, and Pasadena rain doesn’t check your schedule. Also, compacting base rock properly takes a plate compactor and an eye for grade. Guessing at it means you’ll be right back where you started in 18 months.

FAQs

With a properly compacted base, a concrete paver driveway in Pasadena should last 25 – 30 years before major work, while poured concrete realistically gives you 20 – 25 years in this climate. The weak point is almost never the surface; it’s the base underneath and whether drainage was handled correctly. If your driveway is failing at year five, the original install is usually the culprit. Call (626) 657-5396 and we’ll tell you what you’re actually dealing with.
Yes, in most cases we can repair a section without tearing out the entire driveway. We cut out the damaged area, re-compact the base, and match the existing pavers. The catch is that old pavers fade in the California sun, so a brand-new batch won’t be a perfect color match, though Belgard and Calstone lines are stocked consistently enough that we get close. If the base failure runs deep, a partial repair can turn into a larger job once we see what’s underneath.
Most Pasadena paver driveway replacements take 3 to 7 working days from demo to final compaction, depending on size and weather. A partial repair is usually one day. We’ll give you the schedule in writing before work begins, and you’ll get photo updates before and after so you’re never guessing what got done that day.
We keep common 60mm Holland pavers, 80mm tumbled pavers, and polymeric joint sand on the truck for service calls. If your driveway uses a specialty paver, we’ll order it through our supply partners in the Pasadena area, and any wait is reflected in the quote before you approve anything. We also carry matched parts and finishing materials for KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone installations if your Abodu project ties into other remodel work.
