GAF Driveway & Pavers: The Pasadena Owner’s Guide
We stock and install GAF-compatible driveway and paver components throughout Pasadena, with most replacements running $7,000 – $18,000 fully installed depending on square footage and material grade. The job typically takes 2 – 4 working days from tear-out to final compaction. Most Pasadena homeowners discover a problem the hard way: a paver that’s sunk half an inch after the winter rains, a joint that’s washed out into the street, or an edge course that’s wandered since the Santa Ana winds started working on it.
The part that fails first is almost never the paver itself. It’s what’s under it: the base, the bedding sand, and the edge restraint. We’ll get into why below, but if your GAF paver surface looks uneven or shifts underfoot, the visible paver is the symptom, not the repair.
Which GAF Models This Applies To

GAF’s hardscape line under the Timberline Solar and DecoTech branding includes interlocking concrete pavers in three primary thicknesses: 60mm for pedestrian patios, 80mm for residential driveways, and 100mm for commercial or heavy-vehicle traffic. In Pasadena, the 80mm paver is the workhorse for driveways because it handles SUV and light truck weight without cracking under our clay-heavy soil shift.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people miss: GAF pavers use a slightly different joint width than Belgard or Calstone products. GAF’s locking lugs are spaced for a 1/8-inch joint, and if you mix in a generic edge restraint or a different manufacturer’s border paver, the pattern walks within two seasons. We match OEM GAF pavers to the existing lot number when we can, and when a specific color has been discontinued, we source a certified aftermarket equivalent with the same joint spacing and chamfer profile. Sawyer Remodel Pasadena is an independent contractor, not affiliated with GAF, but we’ve installed enough of their paver lines to know which substitutions hold up.
Check the back of an existing paver: GAF stamps a four-digit lot code near the corner, and that code tells us the exact color batch and mold profile to match against.

Signs Your GAF Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Edge migration along the driveway border. The outermost pavers are drifting outward, leaving a widening gap against the concrete curb or planter. The edge restraint has failed or was never spiked deep enough, and once the edge opens up, the entire field loses lateral lock.
- Localized sinking in a tire track. One wheel-line has developed a shallow trough you can feel when you drive in. The base aggregate wasn’t compacted in lifts, or a sprinkler line has been leaking under that section and washing fines out of the subgrade. Pasadena’s clay soil makes this worse because it expands and contracts aggressively with moisture.
- Joint sand washing out and pooling at the street gutter. After any real rain, you see sand fanned out near the apron drain. The joints are eroding, and without that sand the pavers start grinding against each other at the chamfered edge, slowly chipping the face.
- Paver surface has a milky white haze that won’t scrub off. That’s efflorescence, and in Pasadena’s hard water and heat cycles it’s a constant battle. It’s cosmetic on its own, but if you see it concentrated in one area, moisture is being wicked up from below, which means a drainage issue is pushing water through the paver bed.
- A single paver is cracked through the middle, not chipped at the corner. A corner chip is impact damage. A full split through the paver body means the base is voided underneath and the paver is flexing. Replace one, and three more will follow within a year unless the base is corrected first.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard two-car driveway in Pasadena, paver replacement runs $7,000 – $14,000. Larger driveways with a turnaround apron or a walkway connection land in the $14,000 – $18,000 range. If you’re comparing against poured concrete, a full concrete driveway replacement in Pasadena runs $4,500 – $12,000, and asphalt paving lands at $3,500 – $9,000. Pavers cost more up front because the base work and the manual placement are more labor-intensive, but a properly built paver driveway in Southern California will outlast either surface by a decade or more when the base is done right.
Every quote from us includes the full breakdown: demo and haul-off of the old surface, base excavation and recompaction, geotextile fabric where the clay subgrade needs separation, crushed aggregate base compacted in lifts, bedding sand screeded level, OEM or matched pavers placed and cut, edge restraint spiked, polymeric joint sand, and a plate-compacted finish pass. The written price we give you before any work starts is the price you pay. No change orders hiding in the excavation, no surprise “soil correction” line item on the invoice. And the work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the pavers shift or the joints fail inside a year, we come back and make it right.
Luca Romano has torn out enough Pasadena driveways to know that what’s under the paver matters more than the paver itself. “The work tells you everything. You just have to know how to listen to it.” A sagging paver is the driveway telling you the base failed. We listen before we build.
DIY or Call Us?
There are a few things an owner can safely handle. You can pull a single chipped paver in an open field and replace it with a spare if you have one from the original lot. You can re-sand small joint sections with polymeric sand in dry weather. You can even re-level a paver or two with fresh bedding sand if the area is under four square feet.
Where DIY goes wrong is base repair. Compacting aggregate to the correct density requires a plate compactor and a feel for lift thickness. Pasadena’s clay subgrade needs geotextile separation and proper drainage, and if the base is underbuilt, your new pavers will sink in the same spot within a year. The other trap: cutting pavers cleanly at the edge. Paver saws are expensive to rent and unforgiving if you’ve never run one. If the failing area is in the tire track, along the edge course, or near a drain, call us at (626) 657-5396 and we’ll walk the job before anyone swings a shovel.
FAQs

With a correctly compacted base and proper edge restraint, GAF pavers on a residential driveway in Pasadena last 25 – 30 years, and many go longer. The pavers themselves rarely wear out; the failure point is almost always the base or the edge restraint, which is why we focus the repair there. Call (626) 657-5396 if your driveway is under 15 years old and already failing, because that points to an installation problem, not a material problem.
Yes, in many cases. If the failing area is isolated, under roughly 200 square feet, and the rest of the field is stable, we can perform a section repair: pull the affected pavers, recompact or rebuild the base in that area, and relay the pavers. The biggest risk is color matching if the original lot has faded, and GAF’s California colors like the warm terracotta and buff tones fade noticeably within five years. We’ll show you the match before we commit to the repair. For a section repair estimate, call (626) 657-5396.
A standard two-car paver driveway replacement in Pasadena takes 2 – 4 working days. Day one is demo and excavation, day two is base compaction and paver placement, and the final day is cutting, edge restraint, joint sand, and compaction. Larger jobs with extensive base correction can run five days. We’ll give you a written schedule before work starts, and under The Relay Standard you get live arrival times and photo updates every day the crew is on site.
We handle procurement. We stock common GAF paver colors and thicknesses in our Pasadena yard, and we order directly from the GAF distribution network for specific lot codes and larger projects. Lead time on special colors is usually 5 – 10 business days. You’ll never be asked to pick up pavers from a supplier or arrange freight. Call (626) 657-5396 and we’ll check the lot code on your existing pavers and tell you what’s available now.
