Wellborn Kitchen Remodeling: The Pasadena Owner’s Guide
A full Wellborn kitchen remodeling project in Pasadena typically runs $14,000 – $45,000 installed, and we complete most full-gut renovations in five to eight weeks. If you’re reading this, you probably have a Wellborn cabinet with a failed hinge, a drawer slide that’s ground itself into sawdust, or a cabinet face that’s delaminating from years of cooking steam. The good news: Wellborn builds cabinets with modular hardware that’s almost always replaceable without tearing out the whole run.
Most Pasadena homeowners discover the failure the hard way. A drawer starts sticking, then needs a yank, then one day the front comes off in your hand and you’re standing in your kitchen holding a maple drawer face, wondering what happened. Or a hinge sags so a door hangs crooked and won’t close flush, letting dust and heat into the cabinet box. These are fixable problems when you know what part failed and which replacement matches.
We’re Sawyer Remodel Pasadena. We’re an independent contractor based here in town, not affiliated with Wellborn. But we work on Wellborn cabinets every month because this brand shows up in a lot of Pasadena kitchens, especially homes built or remodeled between the late 1990s and the 2010s. Luca Romano, our owner, has pulled more Wellborn drawers out of their slides than he cares to count.
Which Wellborn Models This Applies To

Wellborn has built cabinets under several series names over the years, and the hardware changed between generations. The big split is between older face-frame cabinets and the newer frameless lines. Wellborn’s Prime, Premier, Estate, and Wellborn Select series are the ones we see most often in Pasadena kitchens. Each series uses slightly different hinge boring patterns and clip points, so a hinge from one line won’t always mount cleanly on another.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha that costs owners time: Wellborn changed their hinge mounting standard around the mid-2000s. Older face-frame cabinets used a compact 35mm cup hinge with a snug nickel finish. Newer stuff, especially the frameless Select line, uses a full-overlay hinge with a wider clip plate. If you order a modern hinge for an older Wellborn door, the cup hole usually fits, but the arm geometry is wrong and the door won’t seat square. We match by pulling the old hinge and measuring the overlay, not by guessing from a photo.
For drawer slides, Wellborn used epoxy-coated steel undermount slides for most of their production run. A lot of aftermarket slides sold online as “Wellborn compatible” are side-mount knockoffs that look right in a picture but are about two millimeters too tall for the drawer box notch. That two millimeters means the drawer rides up, scrapes the face frame, and within six months you’re back where you started. We stock the correct undermount profiles for the Select and Premier lines and can tell you in about ten seconds if a slide will fit before we order anything.
If you can find the cabinet label, it’s usually a white sticker inside the drawer box or on the back of the door near the bottom hinge. It has the series name and a production code. No label? We can still identify it by the hinge drilling pattern and drawer box joinery, but the label saves a step.

Signs Your Wellborn Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Drawer drags or binds on one side. This usually means one undermount slide has lost its bearing race, which happens after years of weight and humidity swings. The drawer still moves, but the slide is shaving metal dust into the cabinet and the drag only gets worse.
- Door won’t close flush, or bounces back. The hinge clip is worn or the spring inside the hinge arm is broken. You’ll see the door rest about half an inch proud of the face frame no matter how many times you push it.
- Cabinet face delaminating or swollen at the bottom corner. Water or steam has gotten under the laminate edge. Pasadena’s dry season hides this for a while, but once the seal fails, the particle board core swells and the face is done. A door can be matched and replaced; we don’t have to replace the whole run.
- Hinge screws stripped, holes wallowed out. Someone cranked a hinge screw into the box side without a pilot or used the wrong thread pitch. The fix is drilling and plugging with a hardwood dowel, then re-mounting, not just a bigger screw.
- Soft-close feature stopped working. The piston inside the hinge or slide has blown its internal seal. On Wellborn’s undermount slides, the soft-close mechanism is a self-contained unit; when it goes, you replace the slide, not the piston.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A full Wellborn kitchen remodel in Pasadena runs $14,000 to $45,000. That’s the honest range: a smaller galley kitchen with refaced existing boxes and new Wellborn Select doors might land near the bottom, while a full gut with new cabinetry, countertops, and island work in a larger Pasadena home pushes toward the top. Most of the kitchens we see in neighborhoods like Bungalow Heaven and the craftsman-era streets south of the 210 land in the $18,000 to $30,000 middle band.
What drives the range? Cabinet count and series choice are the big ones, then countertop material and whether we’re moving plumbing or electrical. We price with a written line-item quote before any work starts, so you know exactly what the cabinets cost, what the countertops cost, and what the labor cost is. The number on the invoice is the number you approved. No change orders unless you ask for something new mid-project.
Every Wellborn kitchen remodel we do carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If a hinge fails, a drawer sticks, or a door doesn’t sit right within a year, we come back and make it right. No argument, no invoice.
For a smaller repair, like replacing a single failed drawer slide or re-hanging a door with a new hinge, you’re looking at $180 to $450 for parts and our service call, depending on what failed and which series we’re matching. We bring the common Wellborn hinge and slide profiles on the truck, so a lot of these are one visit.
DIY or Call Us?
Replacing a Wellborn hinge or a drawer slide is not a dangerous job. There’s no high-tension spring and no electrical. If you’re patient, you can order the right part and do it yourself. The place DIY goes wrong is in matching. We’ve been called out after more than one homeowner ordered a “Wellborn replacement hinge” online that was actually a generic 35mm hinge with the wrong overlay, drilled new holes, and ended up with a door that closes like it’s trying to escape. Measure the overlay, match the clip plate, and don’t reuse stripped screws in the same holes.
Where we see real damage from DIY is the cabinet face delamination. People try to glue and clamp a swollen laminate edge, and the glue holds for about two months before it peels again. Swollen particle board doesn’t return to flat. That’s a replacement job, and we can match the door or drawer front to the rest of the run so the kitchen still looks uniform.
If you’d rather not spend a Saturday chasing the wrong part online, call (626) 657-5396. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a hinge, a slide, or a box problem, and what it’ll take to fix it. Luka’s been known to talk people right out of paying for a service call when the fix is a $10 part and five minutes of patience.
FAQs

Wellborn cabinets in Pasadena homes typically last 20 to 30 years before the boxes start to fail, but the hardware usually gives out much earlier, often around the 10 to 15 year mark. Our dry heat is the culprit: the plastic components inside hinges and soft-close pistons get brittle faster here than they do in more humid climates. We see the same pattern at lake houses and beach condos out here, though the humidity there causes a different failure mode: swelling rather than brittle plastic. Most kitchens need hardware replacement once, sometimes twice, over the life of the cabinets.
It depends on what failed. A stripped hinge screw hole can be repaired with a hardwood dowel plug and redrilled. A blown soft-close piston in a hinge is not worth repairing, you replace the hinge. A broken undermount slide is replace-once-and-done. A delaminated cabinet face is not repairable in any way that lasts, and we’ll tell you that straight before taking a dollar from you. Call (626) 657-5396 and we’ll give you an honest answer over the phone.
A full Wellborn kitchen remodel in Pasadena takes five to eight weeks from first demolition to final walkthrough. Smaller scopes, like replacing cabinet doors and drawer fronts while keeping the existing boxes, run one to two weeks. We keep the work on schedule with The Relay Standard: live arrival time, photo updates before and after each day, and a written price before a single tool is picked up.
Yes. We carry the most common Wellborn hinge profiles, undermount slide sizes, and matching screws on our trucks for the Premier and Select series. If you have an older Estate or Prime cabinet, we’ll match the part from the measurements and have it in our hands within a few days. We also keep a ready stock of KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone-specific hardware for kitchens that mix brands.
